(Piazza Porta Terra) - This was erected at the expense of the
very rich Aljama (the Jewish community) of Alghero as is certified by the
document of authority by the Catalan Pietro il Cerimonioso dated 6th November
1360. Originally called Portal Reial and in Savoyan times Porta a Terra, it was
one of the two entrances of the walled enclosure. The second access to the
fortified citadel was by means of Porta a Mare. Furnished by a draw bridge which
leaned on the great gothic arch which is the actual framework of the monument
for those fallen in the 1st World War, the Torre dels Hebreus (Jew's Tower) rose
in front of an artificial moat for protective reasons. On the ground floor you
can immediately notice the vault in squared stone and the Catalan emblem in
relief. The old spiral stairway to the second floor has since been substituted,
but the ribbed vault and the mount for the cannons still remain. |
