Ogliastra is the most
mountainous province in Sardinia. With only some 58,000 inhabitants, it is
also the least populous province of Italy. |
 |
| The populations of the
most isolated villages in Ogliastra are supplying pedigree, medical and
genetic data to research in inherited diseases. |
| The largest
municipalities are: Tortoĺ, Lanusei,
Bari Sardo, Baunei, Tertenia, Villagrande, Sistrali, Jerzu. |

This
breathtakingly beautiful area is situated on the Central East coast over the
Tyrrhenian sea, just underneath the Gulf of Orosei and it stretches up to
the feet of the Gennargentu mountains. Its landscape is divided
between white sandy beaches, sea overhanging rocks, secular forests and arid
deserted plains. The environment here is still completely untouched and
wild, pride of its inhabitants. Ogliastra borders between three worlds: the
agricultural south, the ship farming centre and the fishing of its coast.
