The small town of Castelsardo, is build on top of a conic rock  which jest out on to the sea. The old town wall still surrounds the town, which was heavily fortified against possible attacks from the sea.Ancient and marvellous small centre in North Sardinia, Castelsardo is one of extraordinary examples of medieval  town, still completely intact in his original structure, in the thin little road which climbs on the hill up to the top, occupied by the majestic castle. Its name goes back to the XVIII century, when it changed from Castell'Aragonese, forced upon the town by the Spanish domination widespread through the island.

Its roots are more ancient though: it was the Doria family from Genova, that founded the town 1000 years ago (1102) and giving it the name Castelgenovese.

No doubt the historic town centre is the most interesting and characteristic part of town.

The town has developed around the castle. Most important catch of the town: lobster. In the surrounding the famous Roccia dell’Elefante (Elephant Rock), the ruins of an old monastery and a , a few Nuraghi. Apart from the Cathedral, and the picturesque old town, Castelsardo keeps the holy most ancient  representation of  Christ passion at Easter, the procession of Lunissanti.

Castelsardo, thanks to its geographic position, in the centre of the Asinara gulf, is an ideal departure for of the day trips and excursions. Little more than 35 Km separates Castelsardo from Porto Torres, from where you can catch a boat to visit the park of Asinara. Approximately 60 Km separates Castelasardo from Stintino and the most beautiful beach of the Pelosa. 70 Km is, instead, the distance from Alghero and Capocaccia with its most famous Coves of Neptune. From the other side, to 70 Km, you can get to Santa Teresa di Gallura where you can also catch a ferry (1/2 hr trip) to Corsica or to the archipelago de La Maddalena. 80 km is the distance to Palau, for ferries to La Maddalena and Caprera, home of Garibaldi. Costa Smeralda is only 1 hour drive away.
