This prenuragic complex of tombs is situated about 10 kilometres from Alghero on
the road which leads to Porto Torres. It is one of the most extensive
necropoli in Sardinia boasting 38 hypogea and one of the most important
archaelogical sites in the Mediterranean. The necropoli were used by
populations who were dedicated to fishing and it was here that they buried
their dead. The complex dates back to the recent neolithic era, 3000 BC, and
above all clearly shows the different phases of the important culture of
Saint Michael. The architectural evolution of the artificial grottoes (domus
de janas) is emphasised by the various kinds of tombs. The
bull horn or boat shaped formations, together with the vastness of the
spaces show us more clearly that some tomb areas were places of cult. Many
interesting findings have come from the necropoli, among which small female
idols which are on show at the museums of Cagliari and Sassari.
